For starters I will introduce myself as JAldrich. I want to tell you my background and story. I am senior citizen who found herself without a job due to an accident that would not end. I then was able to relocate into Wayland Public Housing just when my son was about to be shipped to Iraq. I was then able to help out with my beloved Grandchildren when a notice came to move to Hamilton. They really needed some extra support and I will say the whole town helped during this time. It was the most painful time of my life and the deepest trial I have ever known.
I loved being a Mom and being a Grandmother is just as much fun. Of course the temptation to take over is a dominant part of my personality and so my suffering is so personal to me. Enough said.
I started my road to the Statehouse when I heard the Constitutional Convention would take place in 2003. I had promised myself to revisit politics in my old age if I lasted So I said to myself, can you report on this but self knew the memory cells were on hold and so self thought... uhm.. and still small Voice from afar said.. buy a camera.. what??? I hat e technology how will that work.. and the Voice said.. you will be able to listen over and over.. and you will not make mistakes on names or facts..it will all be there.. so I called my sons and said take me shopping.. and one did.
I said don't play games with me I need a camera that goes on and off.. that easy .. we got a Sharp camcorder and the son took off and I sat looking at the box for a few days..then I opened it and sat on the couch and the tears fell about a week before it happened.. I could make it work.
I hate technology. Every step of this rotten road has been a bump. One bump at a time. I have learned to capture video, edit video, and even make dvd's vcr's copy dvd's and now upload to the computer and have my own wow.. tv page with over 100 films uploaded. And you know what I plan to share how to do it.
No one shared with me. The words just rolled by my ears and nothing went in but finally after hours and hours and hours things happened. I call them my technology miracles. I tell the Voice if you want me to do this you better help. And help comes.
So you do not get distracted with me in all this you should understand that the next part was the first part really to being able to get footage. I took my camera to rallies and protests and captured hours and hours of one protest after another. At first people would just say to me..Did you get this?? Can I have a copy ?? and my answer was sure..How much they would say? I would just say , Oh just pay me for the tape cost.. and they would a few bucks.
Then I went inside the Statehouse and started noticing the process a little more. I noticed that the Public Hearings had no recorders. No Stenographers. What? I started asking questions? Why was this so?? The answer was simple. We used to do that but not now. WGBH used to tape but since they stopped we just don't do it. So do you keep a record? Oh yes we take notes. Notes ?? Are they verbatim?? Not really, we have staff members who are in charge of that! What ?? I thought to myself something is fishy here.. I don't like this at all. So I brought my camera and began to record.
That's when it got really fishy.. A guard would look at me setting up.. in a really crowded room then come ask me if I had permission! I did not know what he meant which was exactly what he wanted. Then he would try to evict me, but my inquisitive self would keep asking questions and soon a Staff member would take over.. and pursue my background who are you working for?? No one I am an independant Reporter doing a documentary. It worked. But when they saw me repeating the same thing day after day they got more suspicious until one day a Staff member said you need a Press Pass!
I was really shocked. A Press Pass? Where do I get that? Who do you work for? No one I am Independant Media.. I do documentary footage and will be doing films at some point. Why are you asking this over and over? They would give in but with great reluctance. Where can we see your footage?? that was a really good harrassing question!
I decided to create a Press Agency for Independant Media. I called it the COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS FREELANCE MEDIA REGISTRY. No I was not working for anyone any group or any money even. I was a Senior Citizen who was being innovative seeing a need and creating a slot for me and thousands after me. I was a Senior with a vision and this vision was going to happen just watch me.
I even walked across the street with a Press Pass I designed and showed it to the Secretary of States office and they approved the design. They also said I had to use it about 5 years , an eternity under this stress to me but at least I could say it was approved.
There are many parts of this picture I am leaving out at the moment. I may edit this at some point but I am going with this to give you my background account of how this all happened. I could tell you personally but I would be talking at least 5 hours and even I get sick of that. Besides I need a lot of fluid at my age and that would take a lot of wind to say all this and dry up what there is of my old bones.
The first day I walked into the Statehouse with my new Press Pass on around my neck looking proud, I watched the reactions. It was priceless. I have a sense of humor and it goes with the package. To dare to do this one has to have something going for you or you could end up in the riva .. a piece of dead fish.. Then I went to the meeting. I will not spill the beans here they know who they are.. but the room was crowded and I was going to tape no matter what. I asked permission and the permission was not coming forth. That is what was happening at that point. The public was fully in the room I had my Press Pass on and sure enough here comes the staff person who was clearly going to stop the camera. I say I have been to the Sec of State and they approved the Pass. He looks at the pass and sees the number 978 388 2457.. CATCH OF THE DAY VIDEO NEWS FREELANCE REPORTING ON ONE SIDE MY UGLY MUG SHOT AND THE REVERSE A RED PRESS PASS PICTURE OF THE STATEHOUSE AND COMFLM Independant Media Registry.. I am going to call this number he says. I say go ahead you will just reach me! and he is confused my amunition.. WHAT!!! he says?? I then say as the meeting is about to start at any point here Are you going to frustrate a disabled SENIOR CITIZEN who is trying to tape this meeting?? He physically gets panic stricken and says You can keep you voice down please .. WHY?? I answer you are clearly harrassing a senior citizen.. he vanishes into thin air.. a few seconds later comes back.. smiling you can tape! and it all begins the long road to 400 public hearings begins that hot stanky steamy fishy day taping a legislative public hearing .. The rest is history but is not over we are about half way through this saga to A PUBLIC AFFAIRS NETWORK in Massachusetts.. sing Massachusetts now while I take a break!

Building a Website
The first website I built was a Tripod Website. Tripod is a Peachtree product. They are really trouble. I built 5 websites before giving up. I tried Web.com and have a website www.comflm.com, that has been armor defense proof. They are terrific. I found weebly today 9 4 09 and like the style. I will try to do a blog type site here as many people do not understand my website. When you are a trout you swim naturally upstream. You cannot do the normal stuff you are a trend setter a stone blaster and a builder all in one. You act as an earth mover and a shaker and an alarm bell to the wise. So sit still fasten your seat belts while I show you how to get stuff done. You have to read between the lines to get anywhere in techyville USA. I am going to give this one a shot and hope I can stay here for good. I hate having to move don't you?? When it comes to written material it is terrible to have a thief come and destroy your hours of work. That is the cyber world we now live in. I am a reporter. I report what I see and what I see beyond what I see. I see trouble ahead. If you don't you need to wake up.
My website www.comflm.com, is organized to be a chronological report of our Statehouse Calendar of Events. I only report on what I cover if it is really interesting. Each week I try to find out what is happening and post it on the website, If you are a Reporter this is invaluable information. I then call for permission tape and upload to Blip.Tv
I upload the unedited version however until I am really used to the upload process you can only be sure if you order the full tape of an event.
I use a JVC Camcorder with a 30 gig harddrive. That means I still have to make my own hardcopy dvd for the archive and then I give a copy to any Committee that allows me to tape. That has been my process since the beginning as I found the suspicion of what I was doing with the tapes was a confoundment that needed to be rectified. I now have a good 15 Committees that are open to being taped and love the footage. I consider my job well done and will continue to work with the Statehouse until the full Public Affairs Network is accomplished.
Working with House Broadcast
In 2007 House Broadcast came to being. That office is under the Speakers Office. If you want House Broadcast you have to call the Speakers Office and ask to speak to Don Coleman. He has 4 people to date working with him in the office. He is primarily assigned to the House for Sessions. So if he is not available to tape he is doing the Session. WGBH helps with the Broadcast in theSenate Chamber. They also have the website set up for the Statehouse and it is a long time figuring out who does what. Slowly the whole thing opens up but it is slow. Every 2 years they all move around in the building. So you just get used to where they are and you are learning all over again. I say it is so that every person knows the hideouts in the building except the public. They are in continuous confustion. House Broadcast will tape if asked . They do not pursue a hearing they wait.
I tell them many times of a coming hearing they might tape. If they tape they will go up live or soon on the WEBCAST. You can sometimes watch it live on your TV or WEB TV . They are located on the 4th floor RM 435.
Working with the Docket Room
Apparantly you can order a copy of the full dockets for around $100.00 per year of the public hearings. They do not now want to pass them out to the public. They won't even give me a docket if I ask. I like the version of a folded paper instead of the online version which prints out to double the paper. I also found they erase the next day online. www.mass.gov/legis click onhearings and the date. When a hearing is not posted within the 48 hour notice you will not find it online. Due to the Statehouse not being under open meeting law since the 80s they get away with all sorts of public meeting notice abuse. We can stop that by supporting S1458 immediately.
